Putting together a Movie with Windows Movie Maker
In this lesson, we will be putting together a movie using pictures and a song, provided for you.
Open Windows Movie Maker on your computer by going to the start menu, click on All Programs, then click on Windows Movie Maker.
After opening Windows Movie Maker, on the tool bar on the left, under Capture Video, click on Import Pictures. Import each of the pictures provided on this wiki page, under Images and files. i.e. old lady 8-1, old lady 5-1, etc. However, you may need to download them to the computer first, then import them into Movie Maker from the computer.
After all of the pictures are imported, follow the same guidelines you did for the pictures, now for the song labeled There was an Old Lady.WMA under Images and files. After downloading the song to your computer, import the song by clicking on Import Audio or Music under the Capture Video on the tool bar on the left.
After completing those steps, click on the picture with the ‘Old Lady’ swallowing a fly. When you click on the picture, hold it, and drag it down to the first box on the left in the bottom of the screen. Then click on the picture you think comes next in the story then click and drag it down to the second box of the same size as the first. Continue doing this until you have used all of the pictures provided.
Then, click and hold the sound box, and drag it down to the pictures and release it. It should automatically place itself in the rightspot and open the "Timeline" view. Now, you can line up the pictures to go along with the song. To do this, click on the picture, move the mouse to the right side of the picture,
when you see the two way arrow you may then make the picture last longer during the movie, but also
align the pictureswith the lyrics. You may need to listen to the song over and over again to get it just how you like it. You continue this process for each picture.
After you have set up each picture to the music the way you like, look directly above your picture story line toward the left, you should see a small film strip and next to it, it says, show storyboard. Click on this.
Now look at number two where it says Edit Movie. Here you can add different effects to your pictures by clicking on 'view video effects'. But before doing that, lets add titles or credits to your video by clicking on 'Make Titles or Credits' under the number two Edit Movie section. After clicking on it, choose your desired pick from the list, you can even choose more than one to have applied to your movie.
Then to add the effects to your movie, you can click on whichever effect you like and apply it to one picture or more, just one at a time by clicking the effect and dragging to the picture you would like to have it applied to, then let it go. The star in the lower left hand corner should turn blue. It is possible to add more than one effect to a single picture.
After that step, you can add transitions between each picture. Click on 'view video transitions'. Then click on the desired transition and drag it down to the little box inbetween the two pictures you would like to apply it to, then release.
Throughout that whole process you are able to view your progress by pressing play on the box that is in the middle on the right hand side of the screen. When the movie is how you like it, then it is time to save. First you can save it to your computer. Under three, 'Finish Movie', you can click on 'save to my computer.' After clicking on it, it asks for a Title for your movie, and a place to which to save your movie. After completing that step, it brings you to a list of choices. If you really love your movie and want the best quality to keep, then save it by clicking the first bubble titled best quality. However, the file was to large to put on wiki for us, so we had to click on other settings with video for Pocket PC. This made for a smaller file, and allowed us to place it on the wiki. Then follow the rest of the steps through the saving process.
Congratulations! You have made a video using Windows Movie Maker. Great job!!!
Thank you for joining us for the 'How to' Movie Maker 101. =)
